'55 Super 88 Rochester 4 bbl carb - help please

I've noticed after a year with my 55 Super 88 that the gas pedal doesnt travel very smoothly to the floor. Ive been looking at the carb linkage and the carb says Rochester 4 jet. Based on pictures on the internet, I think this is maybe a 1964 rochester 4gc but its not the one thats in the 55 shop manual. Im trying to figure out what type of carburetor this is (and a manual), and whether or not the linkage set up looks wrong to anyone. There is a strange turnbuckle that connects the throttle that Im not sure is right. Thanks for your help! TOM

It doesn't appear the tag with the model number is still on the carb. I can assure you the turnbuckle does not belong on there and that is more than likely your problem. I would take care of that first and see how it works.

Thanks Redoldsman. It looks like that turnbuckle is taking the place of a link that was probably lost sometime. Based on pics Ive seen, the connection to the throttle shouldnt go over the top like that turnbuckle does, but instead should go underneath. Very strange..the car still runs like a top though.

Give us the number on that brass tag and we can tell you what it came off of. Rochester 4GC'S went on a number of cars for a number of years. There are slight differences in all of them. Could be the correct type of carb but not the year or for your model of car but that turnbuckle is off a gate or something like that...... Tedd

Hi Tedd - thanks for the reply. I understand these rochesters had some tag that went under a screw in the corner that had its model number. Unfortunately, mine is no longer on the carb. Ive been searching high and low and found a Delco/Rochester manual from 1964. It pictures a Rochester 4gc (attached) that in my view looks exactly like mine. Im thinking I have the correct type of carb, but not the year for my model like you said. Maybe off another GM car also..I dont know.
