455 oil pan

Can anybody tell me if a 350 oil pan is the same as a 455? Are they the same for a 1970 cutlass?

Basically they are the same. 455 pans had a "ledge" in them that extended over the sump. They will interchange.

What was the ledge used for?

Can only surmise it was an attempt at windage control.

They will interchange, but they are not the same. BBO oil pans have a pair of "bump-outs" (for lack of a better term) at the front of the sump where it joins the main pan. I can only surmise that these were to allow oil to flow back to the sump more easily past the larger counterbalance weights and crank throws on the BBO crank.

SBO pan:
