Laying down Epoxy Floor In Garage

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to clean up my garage and make it look a little nicer to showcase my Olds. Has anyone ever put down an epoxy floor on their own? I saw that Lowes has the epoxy paint that you can buy by the gallon and then just mix the little chips in with it and roll down on your own.
Just curious if this works well or if I should pay a company to come in and do it for me.

Thank you

I did it to my garage when I bought my current house 7 years ago.. Very easy and durable.. like anything with painting its all about prep--- no different.

sweep sweep sweep, lay out the paint, toss the specs and dry.. easy peasy.

We did ours at least eight or nine years ago and couldn't be happier with it. Like LI Olds said, prep is the key. We got the kit at Home Depot too and it came with some "green" citrus based cleaner to use first. Worked out great on our floor. My wife enjoyed been the "chip fairy" throwing the chips on after rolling the paint.

I did my brothers garage but we didn't throw down the chips. He said it will be a little difficult to move around with his creeper.

Did it in my garage a little over a year ago. I used the kit from Lowes. Can't remember the name. Still looks great. Concrete floor was very old and looked terrible before I started. Prep is definitely the key.

If you want it 'Perfect', have a company come in and do it for you. Plan to spend a bundle on that. If you want it to look 'Good', do it yourself. Be sure to follow the instructions on the can, most of them have to set up for a while before applying. As mentioned, Prep IS The KEY. Also, be sure to have a helper to spread the chips while you roll on the epoxy. Getting the chips even is the hardest part IMO.
The chips work great to add traction, and hide crap on the floor - also, can make it very difficult to see small parts on the floor........
Here's a pic of mine right after I got the shop set up about 7 years ago.

Epoxy Floors

I did my 1,500 sq ft garage myself. I used a kit from Armorgarage, solvent based epoxy which is thicker than the water based epxoies at the hardware stores. Didn't use chips, they look great but make it hard to find anything on the floor.
There is a forum called garagejournal.com that has a lot of information on this subject.

Definitely something you can do yourself. I did mine about 7 years ago. Still looks great, some wear spots have come through at this point, mostly from the engine hoist being used. Like others said, prep is the key. Especially important to make sure the floor is completely dry before applying the epoxy, otherwise it will lift.

Epoxycoat.com very high solids and leaves a much thicker layer than Home Depot or Lowes kits.

Im really happy with mine. Chips help because its really slippery.

Go over to garagejournal forum or info.

Prep,prep,prep.

This is one of the projects I want to do to my garage. I'm also looking to do it to my basement floor as well, but the basement floor would be first
