36 3 window

I am looking for running boards for 36 Oldsmobile 3 window coupe. anyone know where I can get some replacement or fiberglass repro ??

I don't know are they??? anyone know if a 37 olds running board is the same as 36?? or is chevy the same? Thanks

My Hollander Interchange, 16th edition, says all 6 cylinder models in 1935 and 1936 interchange. Likewise all 8 cylinder models in 35 and 36 have the 8 cyl running board.There is No interchange between 6 and 8 cyl. models and no interchange with any other make of car running board.

My ideas:
1. try to salvage what you have if you have any fabrication skills with sheet metal or have a custom shop do it for you.
2. Look for 1935 boards which do interchange (see above).
3. Modify a set of 35 or 36 Olds boards you can find even though they may not be for your 6 or 8 cylinder. You didn't say whether your coupe was 6 or 8 cylinder but I would bet the difference between the two is wheelbase length. The critical part is the shape of the board where it fits the fenders. I'm betting the shape of the fenders at running board attachment points is the same on both 6 and 8 cyl. models. You may be able to lengthen or shorten accordingly plus change the mounting brackets on the boards if they aren't in the same locations.
4. Contact one of the aftermarket firms that make fiberglass fenders and running boards to see if they could make a set. Superior in Mulino, Oregon comes to mind. ( I'm guessing that could be hugely expensive)

I think there are a couple of companies that make metal reproduction boards as well but I'm not familiar with them. Plus it is likely they don't have a stamp for Olds fenders.

If this 36 is going to be an ongoing project invest in a 16th Edition Hollanders Interchange manual as I have done. Google it. It should have been one of the first things you bought for your project. Just as important as tools or spare parts. You will never regret it.

36 olds

I learned today that 6 cyl and 8 cyl are different cars.. this car has no hood and you the seller gave me one that is 4 inches short so I am learning....this car must have been v8 and he gave me a 6 hood is there a way to tell by the cowl tag ??.. I also learned to maybe look at same year cad. or pont. for running boards but would sure like to keep it original.... so any help I hear from you guys is appreciated...

All the Oldsmobile 8 cyl engines back then were an L-head (flathead) straight eight cylinder power plant, Not V8s. Someone can decipher the cowl tag if you copy and post what is stamped on it. You might try googling 1936 Oldsmobile. Sometimes Wiki has quite a bit of basic information like models and model numbers. The 8s were probably a different model so the model number would tell you.

According to the Hollander the Olds running boards from either 8 or 6 cylinder models will not interchange with any other make of car including Cadillac or Pontiac.

One other idea; this is the time of year for car swap meets all over the country. Start with a list of what you know you need, find some schedules for area swap meets and get out there and look. For sure you will find some people who are into old Oldsmobiles and who will be a source of knowledge and possibly some parts.

Also check Hemmings Auto News classifieds. I think they publish monthly and a year subscription isn't prohibitive.

Same thing with Craigslist. From your keyboard you can search a vast geographic area. Every significant town has its own Craigslist and you can go to Car and Truck Parts and just type in 1936 or 1936 Oldsmobile. Just watch out for scammers who are a legion. For something like a hood or running boards it is worth a road trip to check them out in person.

Parts searching is time consuming but you have already picked a car that parts are difficult to find. Be patient. Be persistent.

I have running boards but there for a 6 but I have a rolling chassis for a 6 to. But i'm not sure if you would then need different front fenders?

There is an 8 cyl. hood on ebay. The guy is selling front fenders but mentions in his text that he has an 8 cyl. hood. The ad # is
271093399700 or just type 36 Olds fenders in the search window of ebay. He doesn't seem to want to ship the fenders but says he ships other stuff. Maybe he would ship the hood? For large items I find Greyhound Freight works well but they are not in every town. Also Fastenal, the big fastener and tool company has begun shipping larger items intercity on their trucks. Call your closest Fastenal store to get details. ( Disclaimer: I have no connection to the ebay seller, Greyhound or Fastenal, just trying to do a fellow old Olds guy a favor)
