350 question
350 question
I just bought an engine was told it was a 403 I looked up the casting number and its 3955568 2 but the date code is 36x so all the things I found are 68-70 for the 2 and 73 74 was a 5 but no 76 350 with that code I'm lost and can any one tell me around the car it came out of its going in my 62 starfire
You were sold an Olds 350 from 1976.
The information on the web is wrong. 395558 (NOT 3955568, as you wrote) was the casting number for all Olds blocks from '68 to '76.
That engine, if original, will have #8 heads and an actual compression ratio somewhere under 8:1.
This is a common engine, and not particularly desirable in stock condition, but it is fine base for rebuilding, if that was your intention.
If you had planned on getting a 403, then you need to return to the seller with buddies or guns bigger than his and get your money back. If it was a cheap core, then no big deal, and it'll be fine to rebuild and use.
As for installing it in a '62, you know it's not a bolt-in, right?

As Eric points out, there are a lot of well known errors in the Olds FAQ, and since that website is commercially owned and operated, there is no way to edit the data.
Your 1976 350 block is the last year for the solid main web blocks, so that's a good thing. Nothing you've told us will provide any indication of what it originally came out of, however. Could have been a Cutlass, a Delta 88, or an Omega.
Your 62 came with a 394 first-gen Olds V8. The second-gen V8s have nothing in common with those first gen motors.

thank you and the 6 was a typo lol I do know its not bolt in but the car did not come with the 394 or trans but only paid 500 for the car an 400 for the engine and trans in good running condition thank you for the info again I know it will be a lot for work tobuild this car just starting to learn about olds
You will have to fab up engine mount brackets. The 350 and trans mount very different than the 394.
i would use the 64 to 68 engine mount, part #2261. fab brkts to fit them and you will have to fab your own trans cross member.
Once you pull the 394 you will be able to figure it out.

Your biggest problem will be coming up with an exhaust solution that clears the steering box.
