3/8 OD fuel line double flare help!

I’m working with 3/8 OD fuel line from carb to filter to fuel pump. 61 Olds 98, 4bbl Rochester, 394 CID.

I CANNOT get the double flare tool to hold the 3/8 line in the holder firmly enough. It keeps slipping down and never gets the bubble flare. I’ve sanded down both mating surfaces to try and get it tighter to hold the line. Any suggestions? I’ve tried 3 different kits, no luck with that 3/8 tubing and getting the tool to actually hold the line so it’s FIRMLY clamped.

Put a micrometer on the line and make sure it's 3/8. It may be Chinesium (9 mm).

What material is the line?

Wrap the tube in a shim stock?

I've had difficulty with double flaring steel line. I think the best thing might be to get a quality tool.

Try putting the flare tool in a vise or a hard two hand squeezed vise grip on each side of the holding tool on each edge of the flare tool. To clarify, set your line in holding tool (the clamp with wing nuts) and crank em tight, then set flare tool on the line, ready to screw the tool to make flare, but don’t do it yet. Now, clamp the holding tool in a vise, jaws right up against flare tool, as close to line as possible. Alternative is to take 2 good sized vise grips and clamp them TIGHT, on holder, each side of the flare tool.

This will normally stop the slippage, even on coated or stainless line. If I can find a pic on net I’ll add it for clarity.

Clamp in vise (re-angle tool as necessary) where my barely visible arrow is, thus putting much more direct pressure to clamp line.

Vise Grips would go where these marks are.

This actually worked PERFECTLY, even with a not-high-end flaring tool. Need a bit more practice and attention to detail to get them perfect, but take a look at what I’m using, and the end result. This is just a practice run on a small piece of the 3/8 steel line.
