I am installing a 200R4 in my 71 in Cutlass. Have read a lot on this forum about the details but have not seen anything on hooking the TV cable to the gas pedal like the 350TH kickdown cable was from the factory. Has anyone done this as the card is not set up for this. Any help would be great.
This is what I used on my 2-bbl. I had to modify it to fit my throttle shaft and to hold the cables at the right location, but it works great. And the cam is adjustable too. They have kits for QJets too. Details on how I adapted my 2bbl to this is in the link in my sig.
Is what I did was cut a square hole in the firewall next to the throttle cable, welded a tab on pedal next to the tab where the throttle cable hooks up to and plan on hooking up the TV cable there so it pulls out the same as the throttle cable. I am installing the trans next week. Was hoping someone has done the TV cable this way so I know if its works.
risky:
Connecting the TV cable to the accelerator pedal may not work. You need to have the correct length of pull; too much and you will burn up the trans, too little you may bend or break the TV connection inside the transmission. Here is a pic of the correct geometry to connect a TV cable to the carb or throttle body. I've also attached a pdf from TCI with good info.
I think your right. the throttle cable has about 1 3/4" pull and the TV cable only pulls out of the tranny about an 1". Whats the best and easiest bracket for the Quatrajet for the TV cable as my carb has nothing?
You may be able to drill a hole in the throttle lever to add an extra stud for the TV hookup. The pic below is a Q-jet from an '85 MonteCarlo that came with the TH200-4r transmission; the stud to the lower right is where the TV cable connects. If the throttle lever on your carb has enough metal, you can drill a hole 1.11" from the center of the primary throttle shaft and mount a 3/16" stud for the TV connection. Jegs & Summit sells transmission kickdown studs; the tip part where the TV snaps on needs to be 3/16". The stud part that you would bolt to the throttle lever can be smaller or larger, just find a size that will fit. If you don't have enough material to mount the TV stud, you could tack weld a small metal tab that's large enough to accommodate the TV stud. Just make sure the distance from the center of the throttle shaft is 1.11" and angled slight to the rear.
The TV cable and geometry is not something you want to guess at. Having proper geometry is crucial to proper internal pressures and shifting. Setting this up incorrectly will provide a poor driving experience for the short time your transmission lives.
The hole you mentioned is 1" from the throttle cable, this is not the correct location. The TV needs to pivot around the primary throttle shaft that holds the primary butterflies inside the card (red arrow in the pic below). The TV stud needs to be 1.11" measured from the center of the throttle shaft (about where the red dot is in the picture below). You'll need to add a ] tab to your throttle lever to position the TV properly.
The hole that the spring is hooked to is about 1" lower than the shaft and about 3/8" back from center of shaft. A little had to see in picture. Do you think that would be close enough? Thanks for your help.
