2000 Intrigue won't start

Came out from lunch and my Intrigue would not start. It turns over but sounds like an engine turning over with no compression. Seems to be turning a bit slow but does not sound like it is under a load. Timing belt? Car has 170,000 miles. Any help appreciated.

Don, I doubt you have a timing belt issue. If you broke your timing belt or even jumped a few teeth you would have a valve strike and the starter wouldn't crank the engine. Are there any codes in the computer? If it's spark related, you can always take coil packs to the auto parts store to have them tested. Do you hear the fuel pump run when you put the key in the run position?

I have decided to let someone look at it. I am currently working 12 hr days so I really do not have time to mess with it. I did not hear the fuel pump turn on so I'm hoping that may be the problem. The car just sounded funny while cranking.

Sometimes you can bang on the fuel tank and the pump will start to work.

Well it seems as though the Intrigue is dead. Talked to the mechanic today and he said it had jumped time and engine was probably trashed. I'll get her towed home and put her out to pasture with its older siblings. The search for another daily driver is on. Thanks to those who responded.

How about a 90 Toronado Trofeo'... My dad is talking about selling theirs but it may be overpriced. I think it has under 50K miles on it if I remember right.

Granted there are a lot of miles on the Intrigue... But if you like the vehicle, I would not give up right away... Maybe a second opinion is in order... Your mechanic said "Probably Trashed"... What's the estimate to repair for worse case scenario? How much cheaper is the repair over the cost of another vehicle?

X2. This is how I always look at it. That is why I drive older vehicles.

Are you aware of the fact that GM built a few thousand parts Intrigues just for you?

The Intrigue served me well as my daily driver for the 3 years I drove it. Everyone I talk to says bury it. I really don't have the time or drive to work on it. I'm not much on working on cars that have the engine sitting sideways in the bay.
Thanks for the offer Jensen but I'm leaning towards a small truck?

Oh wait a minute, I guess you said you wanted a small truck.

Really though, good luck in your search.

Blasphemy... Offering up a FORD product, when you could have offered a "Kia Sedona"...

Good luck with your search Don... There's definitely something to meet your needs available in the vast used car market...
