My fuel gage works some time. It starts of at 0 gas then it jumps to the reading then back to 0 again. Is it a ground, fuel sending unit or gage. I'm used to it now but at first I thought it was empty. I loaned my truck to a friend with a full tank he came back and said he tried to put gas in and was full so I told him about it.

Had same problem on a '00 Blazer. I just used my trip odometer until I got rid of it, as a new sender wasn't worth the expense. If it was a couple of years later and you had a "fuel range" readout on the dash, and the needle jumping around but the fuel range was reading accurate, then it would be the servo motor on the back of the cluster. Unfortunately, I know this from experience. The '05 Lesabre has that problem, and has spread to the temp gauge. Once the kids are done with school in a few weeks, I'm pulling the cluster to get all of the servos replaced.

It might have been an issue all of Detroit had because older Ford trucks are notorious for having bad fuel gauges because of the sensor. I need to change out the fuel sending unit in both of the tanks on my 86 f250.

My 98 Tahoe fuel gauge jumps from way below empty to way past full like a 3 year old on amphetamines. My fuel pump is also dying (needs gas down the throttle bore to start it) so it is related.
Fortunately for you, you can jack the bed and replace the pump. Me, I have to drop tank.
