1980 Quadrajet

This is not about my 1971 Cutlass 350 w/ 4 bbl Quadrajet. Electric choke on car. I have that one running OK now. Choke finally operates correctly & car can be started & driven right away. Last month I bought a 1980 Trans Am w/ 301 4 bbl Quadrajet. Electric factory choke. Car runs great after warming up. It starts well but then stalls anytime you try to shift into gear before totally warmed up. The choke plate is open too far after it starts. Closes OK to first fire. Then pops open too far. I've backed off the pull off, & it still opens. Finally, I set the choke coil about 90 degrees toward rich side, counterclockwise to keep it running better. It seems wrong but it works. Is it possible someone replaced the electric choke coil w/ the wrong one. I see there are different items avail. I know it's changed since the original rivets are now replaced w/ screws. I have it running now, but this just amazes me. Carb looks just like the Olds carb except the engine has a lot more vacuum tubes. They were checked/plugged. There are no leaks now. Does anyone know a good Trans Am forum, such as this for Olds? I can't find one.

Al

On some choke thermostats the spring can be removed from the black plastic disc and be installed incorrectly.
