The car was built in 1972, but it isn't based on a 72 Cutlass. It's a 69.

I have no idea why they have that story titled as a 72. Its clearly wrong. Neither Jay or the owner discussed it. And they should know better.

James Garner and the drivers were true car guys and good racers. Lot of automotive history in the story to enjoy.

Don't get me wrong Don. It was a good story and I can appreciate Leno and
his cars, especially the Chev powered 66 Toro he did. That one, WOW.

There were 2 cars...

A '70 'Goodyear Grabber'...

And...

A '72 'Banshee' (actually a '69 that was custom built in '72)

In the video with Jay Leno it was mentioned that the original engine had been replaced with a late model engine. I wonder what happened to the original engine? Apparently it was an Olds experimental engine.

From the Hot Rod article I linked above:

The engine was built from an experimental Oldsmobile 455-cid aluminum block designed under Olds engineer Dale Smith.

Kinda a shame if it has a belly-button motor now.
