1971 Cutlass SX ID

Gentlemen,

Are there any distinquishing charachteristics(sp) such as a number or letter in the VIN ? The owner has no documentation. How can I tell if it is the real deal ?

Thanks,

Matching numbers 455 and proper placement of the SX emblems will help but without documentation you can't confirm an SX.

The only proof is a build sheet, which you are unlikely to find.

Transmission should/could be OD instead of OG

Also FE2 suspension, cutout bumper and HD Cooling (four row radiator) All of these could've been added or had been ordered withe the Cutlass Supreme either through the factory or the dealership over the counter, so docs are a must as stated.

I'm skeptical because about 15 years ago, a friend of mine bought a 1970 "SX" from a fairly well-known member of the old Chubecto Oldsmobile list server. I was helping him work on the car, when I noticed that the frame rails clearly displayed evidence that the trans crossmember had been bolted in the TH350 position at some time in the car's past. Yeah, it's possible that a TH350 was installed instead of the original TH400, but the other explanation is that the car wasn't a real SX.

SX hardtops will have the front fender braces, as well as all SXs will have the rear control arm reinforcements. The front fender braces are hard to see but you will see the nut and bolt on the fenders under the hood, just forward of the hinges.
