1970 W-30 engine hoop?

I have lost points on a car I restored because the hoop on the intake was black. I removed the hoop and took good photos of it before I removed it, and it was black. Everyone is telling me that it is Blue engine color. I want to get some feedback on this. I think most of the people that are telling me it's wrong have never worked on a car before. But when judges take points away because all the other cars at the show are blue. Who's right here, the original untouched motor photo or all the blue hoops.

Short answer - blue

That's a tough one, everyone I have asked has said blue as well. I even have a copy of the engine assembly manual and at the point it is supposed to be painted the loop was already on the manifold, so if they were spraying the engine then they would have had to do a great job of taping off the manifold.

Some folks have said they have never seen over-spray on any W30 or W31 manifold which would suggest it was put on after the block was painted and then the loop could have been sprayed separately. Unfortunately I don't remember what mine looked like. But a big issue is just because it looked black to you does that mean it was always that color. If you are an original owner of the car that would be nice to know. But just the other day I was talking with a guy who owned a 70 442 pace car that he bought from the dealer in 72, he has fixed it up many items but not even he knew the fenders were 71/72s just goes to show you what could have been done very early on with these cars. - long answer sorry

I have restored more then one 1970 W-30 and three of them had never been apart before. One of the still had the original plug wires on it. I have photos of these cars and all had a black hoop on the intake. I wish I could post the photo here, but it's to big of a file. You can check it out on my website. www.mission442.com under the what the faq tab

that's good to know, I seem to remember mine being dark as well but I wouldn't bet on it, just can't remember.

So when one hovers their mouse pointer over HOME, "WHAT THE FAQ" comes up below it. That's clever. Shouldn't there be a question mark with that? Anyway, not sure whether the hoop should be black or blue; that's a new one for me.

The loop on 70 to 72 w30 cars and 70 w31 cars had the loop a natual color and they were not painted. Some had at times overspray. The water outlet or neck was not painted and again may have had over spray. Most of the manifolds had some over spray on them as with the distributor, fly wheel, starter, and the by-pass hose.

That makes sense to me, I have some photos, but I don’t see over spray on intake or bypass hose and am sure the motor had never been touched before. Maybe the owner cleaned it off when new. I am with you on the color, not blue (neutral) Thanks for the feedback

My original one was lost years ago when the engine was rebuilt but thanks to John (2blu442) I do have an original one, sounds like I should leave it bare and let it oxidize naturally?
