1970 442 pace car questions
I am looking at a 1970 442 pace car that is for sale on ebay. The VIN is 344670M311038. The car came from the Sam Schmidt collection. The seller claims that it is listed in the "Pace Car" registry. So my questions are:
1. Can someone point me to the 1970 442 registry? The only 442 pace car list I am familiar with is the track car list on 442.com.
2. doing a little internet research I found that this car was sold at Barrett Jackson Las Vegas this fall. In the auction ad, it listed the engine as a 350 cu in/295hp. Now the car has a 455 in it. Does anyone here know the history of this car that can validate it is a real 442 pace car and can speak of the condition?
I would appreciate any comments,
TS

Provided the VIN has not been tampered with, the 344 tells you that it is a real 442, which in 1970 means it came with a 455 from the factory.
I'll let someone better versed in Pace Cars answer your other questions.

Cowl tag should have Y74 unless it's track car #1 or #2 since both those are already accounted for......
VIN ending 311038 is not on the list of track/festival cars, which I think that you have deduced by now. Latest VIN was ending 304611 according to both sources that I have.
Still have them give a picture of the cowl tag.
If you need a better source than me, I have two people that I know here in the Lansing area that have 70 442 pace cars, one is #2 track and I believe that the other is Y74 code.

I see that it's not listed at that dealer anymore, did you buy it?

I did not purchase the vehicle. They wanted way more than they purchased it at BJ. Also, I was hoping someone on this forum had previous knowledge of the car and could provide insight as to why the car has been advertised as a 350 for over a year at another dealership and at BJ, then be advertised as a 455 currently.

Some people here on C.O. including my self will e-mail or call the dealer and tell them that have many issues with the car or their statements or both. The good guys will correct their statements, and bad ones will just ignore you or just tell another lie.

By the way, I asked the seller for a photo of the cowl tag and was sent this. Seems to have taken great lengths not to show the ENTIRE cowl tag, just the "Y74".

Mike, you are correct that should have been black top car. Seller statement "correct in every detail" While we are at it battery not era correct and the heater hose to the water pump is incorrectly routed, should be loomed by the compressor on the intake.

Scot most Cutlass/442 might have had a black top, but a white top was part of the Pace Car package. The track cars all had white tops as well.
So would it be possible, back in the day that anything was possible, to special order a black top on your Pace Car, as would be evidenced by this cowl tag? Or is there something afoot here?
PS it occurs to me I don't have anything handy to back up this statement, so I'm gonna look it up to be sure. Currently there's a Cutlass Pace Car on ebay that has a black top, that car looks like it's been ridden hard and put away wet a few times.

I've seen both Mike according to cowl tags for them. I think you are right and I have it backasswards as to top colors but I have seen both and proof was in the unmolested (as far as I could tell) cowl tag(s)

Fire the picture up in MS Paint and run the eraser over your stuff, then save and post.
People think they are being sneaky with being cute with photos, and it just serves as more of a red flag.
