'68-'71 442s should all have the cutout bumper/trumpets I believe. In '72 442 became an option package again so if you had a '72 w/ the 442 package AND a 455, you got the cutout bumper. If your '72 442 had the 350 instead of the 455 then it got the standard non-cutout bumper. The cutout bumper may have been a separate option for 350 cars though (not sure, maybe someone can help with that one). Also '70 and '71 Cutlass SX 455 and '70 Rallye 350 cars got the cutout bumper/trumpets too.

I just had this conversation at the last show I went to. I saw a 69 442 there, and the guy came over to look at my 68 442.
Him: You've got the 69 bumper on your car...
Me: No I don't. It's impossible to put a 69 bumper on a 68 because of the different tail lights.
Him: Well then, you've added the cut outs like a 69.
Me: Nope, that's the way all 68 442's are.
Him: No they're not... I had one that I bought brand new that way from the dealer. My brother-in-law took the car without asking and totaled it. I liked the 68 so much that I walked into the showroom and bought this 69 brand new. 68 442's didn't have cutouts...
Hmmm.. So... Maybe it is possible that some got a smooth bumper? I just thought he had a fuzzy memory of a car he barely owned.

But 70-72? You'd have to have the big block to get the rear bumper with cutouts. It wasn't offered as part of a package for 350's as far as I'm aware since they had single exhausts.
I think the guy who was spouting "expert talk" was probably a little confused with a plain Cutlass or Sedan. Maybe he thought all Cutlasses are 442s?? I do believe the 68/69 plain jane cars didn't have a cutout bumper?? I don't mean to get off topic here since the original thread was about 68 442s not plain janes. But can anyone verify this?
