1967 442 Heater Hose

I just purchased 4 feet of original style heater hose from Fusick for my '67 442. I cut it to the correct length and installed it with original style wire clamps. The problem is, it does not seem to be solidly attached. I can easily turn it by hand at the firewall and at the water pump. I even tried different clamps with the same result.

I would not feel comfortable driving this thing down the road without a more secure installation. Can I use Right Stuff or form-a-gasket on the nipples to seal them? I would hate to use new style hose clamps to secure them.

I agree dont fill the system until you solve this. I would verify with Fusick first. Make sure you have the right parts. If you tried worm gear clamps with the same results that tells me you have the wrong size hose provided the core & pump are factory spec. The hose should fit relatively tight before clamping. If you have the correct size hose (5/8) try cleaning any oil or grease from the hose ID and the nipple(s) OD see if that helps. My bets you have 3/4" hose?

You could be right. I just ordered heater hose for a 1967 442. I didn't specify size because I wasn't sure. This is what they sent me.

If you have the correct diameter hose, you can apply a little ultra black RTV and after clamping, let it set at least a day.

If your using spring clamps it will twist easily but may not leak. Worm gear clamps will tighten it proper.

Both hoses do this, or just one?

There are two different size hoses, right? I think the smaller [5/8] goes from intake to heater core, and the larger 3/4 goes from core to water pump...

The smaller one may need to be pre-formed- attempting to use a straight pc bent to suit leads to a kink in the hose.

The factory type wire formed clamps worked when it left the factory, and can work again.

I had problems also with the wire clamps from Fusick. They appear to be the wrong size and do not put enough pinch on the hose. I have some 5/8 & 3/4 clamps I bought elsewhere and the wire is larger and are the correct diameter size. If the clamp is doing it's job,you cannot turn the hose when installed. This problem is multiplied by heater hoses that are not the correct wall thickness and that lets the clamp not apply as much pinch. The aftermarket hoses of today may be as strong because of new technology but most are of thinner wall thickness. You are never supposed to use any kind of sealer to make the hose tight, only as a safe guard against leakage.

I guess I don't care if the hose moves, I just don't want it to leak. The old hose did not move at all, had to cut it to get it off.
I'm going to try the RTV thing and then take it out and run it a bit.
I've got screw clamps on hand just in case of a leak. Thanks for all the help.
