1964 442 Rag....need a little comfirmation.
Hey everyone. New to the forum but always had a soft spot for Olds. Grew up with a 64 F85 Convertible (until the older siblings wrecked it...repeatedly
). Had a 70 442 Convertible back in the late 80's...until my second of five sons arrived. (There goes the boat and ragtop
).
I'm about ready to launch the dream of a new toy. I love the 64-65 years and the 70-71 years...convertible of course.
Came across this local ad and I'm not sure the gentleman is really convinced its a real 64 442 Rag. The decal on the dual snorkel is wrong...and one of the snorkles looks tac welded on. Beyond that...he said it has the 330ci 290 hp engine...but the 64 442 has the 310 version right?

I'm guessing that this is not a real 442 but is there any way to confirm one why or another? From what I've read...there's really no VIN help. Any input would be helpful. I'm thinking with only 400 some made...its unlikely this is legit. The seller is being very honest about it and has the same questions I have about it. Thanks.

Thought I should add that air on a vert is not seen as much is the under hood a/c parts still in tack ?
If so hold on to them 64 /65 are a one year only from my understanding, they are similar but unique to year specific

Also, the air cleaner looks to be fabricated. Note how the pass side snorkel has a flange that's spot welded to the body. The driver's side snorkel appears to be fully welded (though admittedly it's hard to tell for sure in these photos). In any case, the AT obviously proves it isn't real.

The snorkels appear too close together. Using the center hole in the air-cleaner as a pivot point, the snorkels should measure 94degrees of separation (center to center). You could also look to see how clean the cuts are on the underside of the trunk lid, where the 442 mounts. The factory used a template that created rather clean holes. As others have said, the lack of a 4-speed goes against it being a 442 in 1964.

You guys have confirmed my suspicions and I really appreciate the input. On to the next one. I'm really not dead set on a 442 and wouldn't even mind a clone (if priced right) but really want something finished. The only reason I really even looked at this one is the possibility that it might be real. Thanks again guys.

It needs a little work but would be worth $5000 if the metal is solid (there are no remanufactured panels for 64 and 65 cutlass). The top is a cheap fix at around $300. Install it yourself for a fun experience. Conversion to a 4 speed is also fairly inexpensive and it's fun acquiring those parts. These cars are so fun to work on and depending on your skill set or comfort level, tackling restoration can be affordable if there is minimal rust. Good luck with your search.

I think this car has some rust in the quarters and who knows where else. Almost looked like rust through in that pic of the tag. We had a green 64 with white top and interior...always thought is was one of the cleanest lines on a car and it always fit my eye when it comes to Olds....just finding a rust free one is tough.
