I am working on a 1970 442. I have an Am radio with an 8 track. Both work fine. The problem I have is when I ground the 8 track the Am radio doesn't play??? If i un ground the 8 track you cannot hear the 8 track play? Any help??

How's your ground on the radio? I'm guessing you have the under dash factory 8 track?

 

Yes it is the under dash 8 track. I grounded the radio to the case and still the same thing?

 

Have you checked your speaker connections?

 

Both speakers are hooked up and work fine??

 

Have you tried grounding both units at the same time???

 

I'm assuming that your speakers are tied to ground.

 

Sounds like a floating ground. I had a similar problem when wiring an amp to my stock radio and aftermarket tape deck.

You need to install a "floating ground adapter" - like this:

Wouldn't that do the same thing as grounding both units?

 

Thanks so far for the info. I have tried to ground both units and the radio does not work. If I unground the 8 track the radio works, but the 8 track doesnt work? I take that back the 8 track works but no sound from the speakers?

 

I know it's a bit of a backyard mechanic's solution. But why not just put a flip switch under your dash that you switch when you want to play your 8-Track.

It's a 0.50$ solution. Maybe not proper but it'll suffice for the meantime.

 

IIRC there is one wire that goes up to the front center speaker and the speaker itself is grounded, that's how the radio gets grounded. There is a separate ground wire for the 8 track player

 

It would appear to be-yes. Never tore apart a floating ground adapter.

They do solve those weird problems.

 

To avoid any further problems, take the speaker grounds and run them throught the floating ground adapter.

Radio gets a ground from the chassis.
