Question no start, no reason

Can anyone help? I have a 1995 cutlass supreme convertible
w/factory security system. Sometimes it will not start for no reason-turn the key and nothing-dash lights remain on, but no
starter action-I tried running it through the gears while shifting
(auto trans), so it does not seem to be a neutral safety switch.
Starter and battery are good. After several minutes it will start
as if nothing happened- I suspect the security system-does anyone know how to bypass/disable this system so I can possibly isolate this problem? Also, after the last incident the security light stayed on for several minutes then went off. Also I jiggled
the key while turning it-ignition switch is tight
thank you

When the security system is activated it disables the starter and fuel systems. Bypassing is no problem you will need to measure the resistance value of the little resistor in the key, this the little shiny metal chip just below where you hold the key to turn it. Take your volt ohm meter and measure the resistance value of the resistor there is 9 values used in the keys. I can get a list of exact values tommorrow . Once you determine the value go to RADIO SHACK and purchase resistors to create the same value I have a pack of 100 to mix and match several to create a string of resistors equal to the value of the chip in the key there is some leeway in each directon of a few points. You then locate the wiring harness going to the contacts in the key cylinder, it will be two small wires run together by themselves routed down the steering column , remove the panel under the steering column there will be a connector you dissconnect and use the resistor string as a jumper replacing the contacts in the key cylinder . Its been a while since i bypassed one seems they wires are white above the connector and change to a color after the connector. Seems like the resistors come in a assortment and was less the 10 dollars for a pack of 100 or so. Will look you wire colors tommorrow also.

Try cleaning your key. I would do that before bypassing it. If cleaning the key doesn't work then it didn't cost anything. I only say this because I've had this happen to me and cleaning the key did the trick.

Also welcome to the site.

X2. My 1993 Allante has VATS and occasionally won't start. I clean the terminals on the resistor chip and it works fine.

Sorry for the delay bypassed one of these yesterday on a pontiac. The wires coming down fromt the ignition key lock cylinder are in a protective sleeve they are white they are the only 2 wires in the sleeve. At the connector they connect to a white with a black tracer and a purple with a white tracer. On the pontiac the connector was fastened to the airbag wiring harness this is yellow. Unplug the connector and jumper the connector end going into the car wiring harness with the resistor combination made from the above post.

Thank you for the information-when I looked under the dash
I discovered that the system had already been bypassed-
however, whoever did this only twisted the wires, allowing the white wire to come loose- resulting in the no start condition.I sodered the wires and have not had a problem since.Thank you for solving this very frustrating situation-
