Wiring hei and gauges, in need of help

Ok I thought I had the electrical manual for the car but I don't. I have several others. Can any one help me out with a diagram. Or tell me where to go off. I want to wire the hei in and need a connection that 12 v on cranking and running. I realise I've asked about the wiring before, however I have no diagram. And I want to make sure its right.

What vehicle and year?

I used a terminal on the fuse block marked IGN on my 71. It is switched +12 Volts.

The easiest thing to do is to simply use the two wires that went to the + terminal of your old coil. One of those is a resistor wire that needs to be replaced with a regular copper wire to ensure full 12 volts to the HEI. Connect both of those to the BATT terminal on the HEI cap.

Presumably a 1964 JETSTAR 88, since most people here will otherwise assume it's a Cutlass. In any case, that is irrelevant. Every GM with points is wired exactly the same. Use the existing wiring as described above.

Yes it's a Jetstar 88. Thank you for the info.

I'm guessing those are the wires. I checked today and it gets 12 volts cranking and in the on position. Is the white fiberglass looking wire the resistor wire. If so how far back do I trace it to replace it with solid copper wire?

The brown'ish wire your describing goes all the way to the bulkhead connector. That is the resistance wire. You can remove the terminal and wire from the bulkhead connector and place some heat shrink over both ends and tape them to the harness. Replace it with a 12ga.

Actually, the 64 full size cars don't have a bulkhead connector. The harness simply passes through a grommet in the firewall.

Thanks for the correction, another example of "***-u-me".

It was surprising to me too. My 67 D88 also doesn't use a firewall connector.

Based on that info, replacement of that wire became a lot easier if it is accessible under the dash. Does it run all the way to the ignition switch?
