Hello, i have a 71 cutlass s with a 350. i bought an aftermarket engine temp guage and would like to have the original dummy light working also. I noticed the orig going to the water pump. is there another location i can use or is the water pump the only choice. this is the orig 350 with orig intake.

My fav place to tap into engine temp on Olds engines is the back left corner of the manifold. If you bought your gauge new, is should have come with a few adapters.

Just hooked up my Delta's aftermarket gauge right there. I had the factory gauge there too, but it was an add on in my car

 

Mine goes into the front of the intake to the right of the waterneck when looking at the engine

Redog, you mention back left, is that when you are standing in front of the car facing it or if you are sitting in the car.

Droptopron, is that the same place the orig dummy light on the dash would go into? i am trying to find a spot so i can have both the red dummy light and the new temp guage working.

There should be two ports in the manifold at the front. One is for the gauge, which I believe is plugged and the other is for the TVS / idiot light. Can you post a picture of your manifold? It would help.

 

i see the 2 but both are being used. The one on the right, as you are facing the car, appears to be the idiot light, as the one on the left has what appears to be some sort of device with vacuum hoses. I took a pic off my cell phone but cannot find here how to attach it to this message.

The one on the left with vacuum hoses is the TVS...it retards the timing until the engine warms up or something like that. It's an emissions thing. Unless the car is going to stay completely factory it can be removed. Most aftermarket intakes have 3 ports at the front of the manifold so that all three can be used...but on all of my cars the TVS has been, "lost".

 

Temp senders need to be in a location where coolant is flowing. The problem with the back corner of the intake is that it's a "dead end" and air pockets may prevent you from getting an accurate temperature reading. There is an aftermarket sleeve that goes in the upper radiator hose that has a threaded bung for a temp sender if there are no other ports available in the front intake crossover.

 

thanks for everyones responses...i went ahead and disconnected the idiot light sensor and installed it there for now. Since this car is very original i will eventually find a different location so i can reattach the idiot connection. btw, i am generally around 200 degrees, sometimes 205 but no higher...is this a good temp?
