underhood lamp

Does anybody reproduce these? The wire broke off mine at the socket (39 years of flexing perhaps). I will try to fix mine but if unsuccessful, I want to replace it but can't seem to find anyone that sells it. I tried OPG, Fusick, Brothers, YearOne.

I'm sure this is used-piece only. You have to find one off of another car.

If you can't find one in a junkyard I might have one sitting around. Send me a PM if you can't find on because I will probably forget to check back here. I will then look for it and let you have it if I find it.

Boy, that's a nice looking one on ebay, but, $38! Wow. How badly do you need to see under the hood? Would a flashlight do?

This could work but it is not correct for the Olds. The Olds lamp is slightly different in apprearance and wiring. Thanks though.

Thanks Dan! I'll try and re-solder this one but if I can't, I'll PM you.

Seems like some of the Chevy vendors had them repopped but this was about 20 years ago. May not be available now.

One more note, a dis-claimer. I don't remember what Oldsmobile it came out of, probably a late sixties or early seventies Delta or a 98. I will try to remember to look for it this afternoon.

I've never seen the Olds type in reproduction, the lead has a Packard 56 connector and more of a flat L shaped bracket with radiused corners.
I think the Chebby type goes through a hole in the hood insulation and the bracket stands it off more because of the pad thickness
I've been sort of looking around for one, didn't have one stock but since I put the hood pad on the Vista it looks like something's missing because of the cut-out in the pad for it.
If you go to any of the big Chebby parts places they have them repop for Chevelles and Camaros and stuff, look like the one on evilbay.

Well my repair attempt was unsuccessful in fact when trying to manipulate the contact so I could re-attach the lead all the mercury came out! So much for that. I think I'll order the Chevy one and hold them side by side. If it's close enough, I'll cut the lead 14" down and attach the proper Olds spade connector to it so I can plug it in to my correct harness.

Well after looking at a couple of close up pictures of the Chevy one it's base is just too different for me to be happy with it. I guess I'll just reinstall mine for now (non-operably) and keep looking for one.

I found a lamp assy on Ebay that is pretty much identical to my original. Exact base and shroud, wiring, connector and it's like brand new. However, when I install it, the mercury switch works backwards (comes on when I CLOSE the hood and goes out when I open it!). If I mount it backwards, it works correctly (except it's backwards and hit the top of the firewall when I close the hood!). Before I contact the seller, is there anything that can be done to correct this or is it simply the wrong application? The contact and wire are sealed and can be easily removed from the base once the bulb is out which could not be done with my original.

This is a snafu for sure.
Makes me wonder if the thing was opened up and "repaired" and the merc switch was put in backwards.
I would contact the seller regardless/

Contacted seller. He has many listed so hopefully he can send me another contact/socket assy. Too bad too 'cause this one's beautiful.

Seller says he has one other one behaving like that and he must have put them together incorrectly after taking them apart to clean them. He says I can pull apart the rubber socket base and 'flip' the capsule around that is inside and it should be fine. Sound like a plan?

It sounds easy enough, but be careful not to break anything. some soldering my be involved, too.
Doing this yourself might save the hassle of shipping and waiting, and possibly eating the return ship charge. However, if you break something, he might not be willing to exchange it then.

Why doesn't he test them after cleaning them?
(I know, I know - it takes him 30 seconds a pop...)

OK. 'Split' the socket lengthwise, removed the mercury 'pill' and reassembled. Works perfectly and looks like new now!!! I'm so happy!!
I know, it doesn't take much to get me excited

Congrats Mike !! I'm right there with you on the cheap thrills...that was one of the first things I added to my ride...it sure looks good in the garage with the underhood light on although ironcially, I'll probably be really pissed if I ever have to actually use it like alongside the road broke down!

What's been going on locally? Have you discovered any new shows? Still hanging out at G57? I finally got my glovebox back on although I had to buy another just for the woodgrain but hey, that's what I get for my amateur mistake....so if you know anybody looking for a blue glovebox (minus the woodgrain) let me know...LOL.

Murphy 77,
I have a friend who gets me parts like this all the time. I'm sure he probably has it. PM me or email me if you want me to check it out. Part will obviously be used, but with a little TLC can look great.
