Test voltage at R Terminal on Generator

On an externally regulated generator, 1970 Cutlass

Hi Guys: no emergency, but could someone give a description of how to test the voltage at the R terminal of the generator while the car is running?

I am reviewing the Charging System Diagnosis procedure in the 1970 CSM (page 12-7) and would like to understand how to do this safely.

Thanks.

Just to be clear - I know how to use a voltmeter

I know you are not supposed to disconnect the RF plug with the engine running.

So how do I measure the voltage without disconnecting the RF plug?

Use a paperclip into wire connector to measure volts while running. Just set it up before starting.

Can you use a pointy needle probe (pig sticker) to contact the R terminal from the backside of the connector?
