Starter Problem

About 4 months ago my 68 Toro fired up and drove fine then nothing. No electric, nothing. Changed the solinoid at the starter and worked fine. Last night after sitting, car cranked strong several times before firing. drove fine letting it warm a good 10 min and stopped at buddys house. Go back to start and interior lights were on, hit the key, a millisecond it tried to fire then nothing. All electric gone. Test light at battery good, junction block good, down at starter good. Go home to get trailer and by the time I get back, the interior lights at least will turn on dim, gradually stronger but when I hit the key, immediately the elctric shuts down. Is this the solinoid again or the battery ground needing replaced? Is there another ground large enough to create this? I'm thinking about changing the entire starter this time. Thanks for any insight. Pat

Sounds like a bad connection among the battery cables. The starter would not affect the interior lights or the rest of the electrical system when not cranking.

Classic dirty / bad battery clamp connection.

There is oxidation between the post and the clamp, but a small bridge of conductive material remains. You hit the starter, a large current goes through that bridge and vaporizes it, now you have no connection at all.

Clean your battery terminals.
