Reverse lights on a 49 Olds 88?

I’ve got a 1949 Olds 88 with what appears to be backup lamps. They look period correct and original. They don’t work. Here’s the odd thing, backup/reverse lights aren’t listed on the wiring diagram in the Olds service manual. Can anyone confirm?

Those appear to be the correct backup lights for 49. In 50 they were mounted above the taillights. Maybe a 50 schematic would show. I am guessing (dangerous thing) that the neutral safety switch is mounted on the steering column close to the firewall. This switch includes the backup light switch on my 54. It is odd they would not be included in the schematic. Sorry I could not help more.

Those are called "beehives" and were optional on all GM cars starting around 1948. Pontiac and Buick used them at least till 53, maybe 54. Backup lamp switches back then were often on the shift linkage underhood.

As to why they're not in the shop book, who knows? As dealer installed "optional" equipment, wiring and instructions came in the accessory box.
