Reverse Lights not working

OK what simple thing am I missing here? Fuse is fine for reverse lights, which also controls signal lights (which do work). Did not notice any wiring issues in the trunk. Car passed inspection 7 months ago, but am assuming both lights have not magically burned out simultaneously since that time.

Have you checked the neutral safety/reverse light switch on the top of the lower steering column under the dash?
It could be bad, connector unplugged, dirty connection, out of adjustment, switch loose.
The CSM shows it all and how to adjust it.
Auto trans I assume.

I do not recall reverse lights being required for most state inspections.

With the key on RUN, short the two green wires on the neutral / reverse switch and the lights should come on. If so, then either adjust tor replace the switch.
If you can move the shifter up or down and lights flicker, then try adjusting first.

Of course check the bulbs first....

Interestingly, in Virginia, reverse lights are not required equipment, but if they are installed on the car, they must work or it's grounds for failure.

Go figure.

Did not know reverse lights were not required for inspection, therefore will check bulbs first and then will check switch at the base of steering collumn, if bulbs are not the issue.
Thanks.

No. Sounds like your neutral switch needs some minor adjusting.
If you get the reverse lights to come on in R but later will not start in N or P, then the switch will prolly need replacing.
If you DO replce it, make sure the new switch has the seat belt warning switch also (should be 6 prongs on it) if you want the belt buzzer to work.

In TX, I have never seen an inspector even check reverse lights, so here I guess it is not a requirement...

OK here's the exact scenario. Car is in Park, then placed in Reverse...NO reverse lights. Car is in Park and placed in Neutral...Reverse lights work, but then just bump the shifter up to reverse directly from Neutral and presto the lights now work in Reverse. But this is the only way to get these lights to work in reverse. Car will start in neutral...at least at this point. How is an "adjustment" made to the switch?

Loosen the two screws that hold the NSS to the top of the steering column, slide it until adjusted properly, tighten screws.

Tried adjustments both up and down...same net result. Have ordered a new switch which will be at the parts store in a few hours. Unless there are any other suggestions, I will be replacing the switch...which look original, that means old

If adjusting did not help, then it is time to replace.
