New Wiring Harness?

Hey guys. I was doing some work under the dash yesterday and noticed that my wiring harness is in pretty sad shape. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Painless or Summit universal wiring harnesses? I searched on line last night and found this one from Summit that would fit my Olds 98 since I have power everything.

I was thinking this might be a good project so I could get rid of the rat's nest of wires in my engine bay, under the dash, and in my trunk. The complicated part of my current wiring harness is that since the car is so old there has been alot of cutting and pasting of wires over the years. So when I was under the dash yesterday I found alot of loose ends and such. It is sort of depressing trying to sort it all out.

Has anyone done a new wiring harness in their car? Does Summit carry a good kit? What should I expect if I do a project like this? Thanks for the help...

Painless is very "painful". I put one in my 1970 442 and it took about a week to install. The fusebox needs a different mounting setup, then you have lots of wires to route, trim, and hang. I would be inclined to go with a factory setup and maybe just replace the harness that's cut up. That was another thing, I ended up doing bumper to bumper instead of just under the hood which was the problem area on my car. I would either buy a good reproduction harness from someone like supercarsunlimited.com or get a good used harness from a parts car. John

I just read the rest of your message and see you need work all over the car. As soon as I saw "Painless Wiring" I had to react! What year is it? Since a lot of the 98's came loaded with options I wonder if you could find a parts car of that or a similar year that would match it? It may cost a lot of money to replace everything with reproduction. If you decide to go with painless plan on it taking a lot of time and patience.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard from others that a Painless kit is a pretty big project. I have a 1964 Olds 98. It is loaded. It has power windows, seats, a safety sentile, and autronic eye just to name a few of the options. I would definitely have to take some time to get it figured out. I will take a look at that website you posted. Thanks.
