need to replace alternator
Can someone recommend a quality replacement alternator for my 1970 442? Y72 (HD cooling), (G91) 3.32 gears and C60 (AC). Originally came with 1100890 55A. Found a date coded reman for $1500. Really? I don't think originality is that important!

I discovered that a local armature shop would rebuild my alternator, replacing just that parts that were needed, and it was cheaper than buying a rebuilt unit from the auto parts store. If the alternator required a complete rebuild, they did it for the same price as the parts store remanufactured unit, so it was a no-brainer to bring it to them.

If an actual OEM replacement not a requirement for you, Bosch and Powermaster both make all brand-new direct-fit internally regulated replacements - Bosch is 62 amp and Powermaster = 100amp. I have the Powermaster and it's been rock solid since install about 2 years back.
Either alternator will allow you to eliminate the firewall mounted voltage regulator by performing a simple engine harness wiring bypass for the connector that plugs into it.
