Is My Gas Tank Empty or Full?

My gas gauge is not working properly.
(1972 Cutlass Convertible)
I took it out of the dash, to check it (because its much easier to check it there, than to check the sending unit) The gauge seems to be working somewhat, but no matter where I move the needle to, as soon as I connect it again, it moves way past the full mark, to about the three o-clock position.
Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing this? I am afraid that it might be the sending unit in the gas tank, but I have no idea how to get to it to check it, or repair it.
Thanks in advance for your help.

PS: does anyone know how to spell Gage? Guage? Gauge? Gayge? Gaige?

When I dropped my gas tank, I did not hook up the ground. I had the same thing happen. Check the ground connection. If it looks good take off and clean anyway.

Read this and it will tell you how to check it. And how I fixed the other problem I had.
