horn dilemna after steering wheel swap

I swapped in a sport steering wheel in my Seventy Cutlass but couldn't get horn to work after. Thought the contact was bad. It had worked before the change and I know the horn didn't work in my other car I pulled the wheel from either. So I put it all together and left the spring and plunger out til I get new contact. So imagine my surprise when the last time I drove it I hit a bump and the horn started blaring constantly. I unhooked the wiring from the horn to stop it. Now I'm wondering where to start looking for the problem that caused that. Any ideas?
