Fuel gauge and other issues

Hello I am also having similar issues. My fuel gauge is stuck on E. I had the car running and disconnected the wire coming from the tank into the trunk and now my gen light is always lit up when vehicle is running. Also at night the fuel gauge cluster flickers or turns off when driving with the lights on and car hesitates on start up every time. Had the battery tested and was told there is a chance the alternator is not providing enough amperage. I have a 71 cutlass any insight is appreciated.

You have multiple problems. The fuel gauge stuck on E, as noted above, means a short in the system. Your flickering lights and gen light issues could be the alternator. You had the battery tested. Have you had the alternator tested?

I moved your post to its own thread as your problem/s are not the same. So if you reconnect the fuel gauge wire do all the other issues go away?

As the other guys have said, if the gauge is on "E" there is a short........the other issue, sounds like alternator. It's about a 10 min job to remove it....go get it tested. A new one is about 80 bucks and about 10 mins to put back on....not a big job (again, if I can do it....ANYONE can).....so not exactly cost prohibitive.

Just as a unrelated side note.....is it me or does it seem really strange that a starter is cheaper than an alternator??

Cheers,

Troy

Your car has an external voltage regulator. Trouble shooting through your wallet gets expensive. Don't randomly throw new parts at your issue, trouble shoot logically.
