"Electronic" Ignition in a 1968 442

Hello All,

I have a 1968 442 that came out of California. I met a guy that used to work on the car and he said that at one point he removed some type of electronic ignition module and replaced it with a standard points distributor.

Could this be true?

Did Olds have an "Electronic Ignition" system in 1968?

Thanks in advance for your help !! ,
Bert

It had probably been converted to a Pertronix or some other electronic that replaces the points, and he just put it back to the original points/condenser set-up. I run Pertronix in all my old cars and have for the past 20 or so years. Quality of points in 2015 is hit and miss, and points wear and get out of adjustment. They work fine, as long as you readjust them periodically. You will not gain ANY performance with the electronic ignition, but what you will have is an engine that is always running like it has brand new points in it, without any adjustments. That assumes they are properly installed, which is really pretty easy.

I believe it's Option K66- Ultra High Voltage Ignition System

That is correct, a fairly rare option. It was the precursor to the HEI system, using the same sort of magnetic pickup coil in the distributor. Of course, the 1960s electronics technology required a large external electronics box instead of the small module that goes inside the later HEI.

If the car originally had K66, it would have three mounting holes on the front of the passenger side plastic wheel well
