Opinion on this Breakerless Electronic Ignition System Conversion

I'm looking at getting rid of the points distributor in the 455 I'm going to be using and replacing with something a little easier to maintain. I've looked at the pertronix but came across this ad from Rusty Nutz and Rodz. Would like opinions on this solution and if anyone here has used it. Thanx everyone.

for that price you can pick up a nice hei. distributor. I bought one from ebay from procomp for 50 dollars worked great. stacked up against my proform hei the only diffrence i noticed was a a bit weaker spark not much and big price diffrence. for the money the procomp hei worked really good .

Or you can get a Pertronix unit.

I haven't heard anything about these guys (yet), but I would be concerned about their quality if one of their major bold-face points says "Auto shut off to prevent coil damage or dead batter if the ignition is left on."

If they're that careless with their advertising, I'm not sure I'd be confident of their build quality.

Or i'm also sure you could contact some of our friendly neighborhood parts guys and see if they have an HEI for you. I'd check with them first.

Make sure its for an Oldsmobile and not for a Chevy. I agree you can get a pertronix unit for less. It has a proven reliability amongst all the users!

I have a CraneXrI conversion and have been happy with it. Its got the added benefit of a built in rev limiter. Personally I don't like the looks of an HEI under the hood of a classic car. maybe that wouldn't matter to some/most. Personally I don't see going for an unproven product for twice the price.

What difference does that make

That looks and sounds (from the copied wording) like this one:

If it is, I have not heard anything bad about the unit. I even thought about getting one for my 72.
Not sure if it is the same product though. If the vendor will not tell you the brand or part number, than I would run away.

I thought the chevy distributor mounts through the intake and the olds bolts right to the block.

Personally, i wouldn't want the heart of my oldsmobile engine to be made for a chevrolet, unless the two part numbers were identical.

If it were a chevy engine, it would get a chevy distributor.

What you appear to be getting is the little module that goes IN the disty - not the disty itself, despite the picture of the disty.

Thanx guys. I'll fire off an email to them and ask them some of the questions posted here. I can't use an HEI because of the edlebrock intake manifold that came with this 455. The HEI is too wide or I'd grab one for sure. This motor is a screamer for the few mods the previous owner did and I don't want to be changing too many things
