Hi folks. I'm trying to get some ideas for where to look next. I have a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham. I'm thinking there's a major wiring overhaul is needed. I have a new battery and put new battery cable connectors. After connecting the battery, there was smoke from the back bottom of the block on the driver side. We figured out the wipers were on. We disconnected and turned everything off then reconnected everything and attempted to restart. Nothing. I'm not sure what to look at next. Electrical is generally out of my wheel house. Ideas?
This is the 1976 Oldsmobile FACTORY Chassis Service Manual. It's the same book Olds dealer mechanics used to service these cars when new and will be the best money you ever spend for your Cutlass. Look for an original print copy, they're fairly inexpensive on ebay and other sites all the time. Stay away from PDF, CD-ROM and other digital copies...
Did I mention the CSM includes full color wiring diagrams? along with service procedures for about any other issue your Brougham may have? 😎 That can be kinda important because about everyone who worked on these cars new is retired or dead, and if you take it to a "modern" shop they will look at you like you just arrived from outer space.
