Electric Choke '71 Cutlass
Electric Choke '71 Cutlass
Engine is a 350 w/ 4 bbl, & electric choke. Where should the choke get 12 volt ignition feed? Prior owner recently added HEI ignition. There are now 2 what look like white wires connected to a red wire leading into the distributer coil. If they didn't change the harness, it looks like it could be running through a resister wire. Is this possible? HEI should have 12 volts. Car runs perfectly. The choke is currently wired to a tap into the washer circuit yellow wire. This works BUT is an Ign. Accy. fed wire along w/ the radio. Works as long as you don't use Accy. w/ a cold engine. I have 2 wiring diagrams (one is from the factory manual) & neither show the choke circuit.
Thank you, a good solution. Conversly I just was looking at a wiring diagram & my car. I have an unused/disconnected at the trans, TCS switch, at the right front of the engine. 2 green wires w/ a resister across the terminals. One is Ign.+, & thge other goes to the trans switch. My trans guy said it's disconnected down there. Car's vacuum advance is connected directly to manifold vacuum. Could one not use that green Ign. wire to power the choke also? It would be very simple. About 3" from the choke.
As long as it's SWITCHED 12v power you're good. You want it powered in RUN only, not when the ignition switch is in ACC.
Joe's design powered from the alternator thru a 3 terminal oil pressure switch is the best way I've seen to do it.
