Changing Gauge Cluster on a 1980 Ninety-Eight
So just as the title says, I'm considering upgrading the gauge cluster on my Ninety-Eight to the factory optional complete set with coolant, oil and voltage readouts. I can acquire a panel online with the gauges attached (they go at the base of the steering column) but it would also require changing the center dash panel to one with cutouts to move the cruise and rear defog switches to next to the radio. How difficult of a job is this likely to be overall, wiring in the extra gauges and moving the switches? I've been told the type of sending units would need to be changed. Would this disable the warning lights altogether?
If you have access to a parts car get as much of the dash and instrument panel as you can. You'll also want to check the engine for the coolant temp sensor, oil pressure sensor, alternator and related wiring. If you don't have a FSM make sure you buy one. I'm sure the wiring is different between a car with and without gauges.
I know people have done the changeover and I hope my fat meat hooks can make it happen.
