a/c just died in 85 delta 88

drove the car for awhile this morning with a/c blasting

got in this afternoon and nothing, compressor will not kick on

put a new relay in,and replaced the 2 prong connector at the compressor

both of them were pretty melted up

still nothing

where do you check for 12 volts?

at the relay??

The first thing to check for is adequate freon pressure in the system. If the freon has gotten low, the pressure switch will prevent the compressor clutch from engaging.

Yeah, often when pressure is low (due to low freon), the compressor won't kick on. Had this happen in two of my cars.

you can jumper the pressure switch with a short wire or paper clip to see if it turn on. if it does then you need more refrigerant. just don't run it like that. you can find the pressure switch on one of the lines, most of the time on the older cars, tord the front.

i tried the pressure switch trick, got nothing

my a/c has always been freezing cold,i cant see low freon charge being the culprit an hour after i drove it

i think it's electrical,im just trying to figure where else to look

first, make sure you're getting 12 volts TO the relay when the dash switch is on ac. if so, then check for 12v out

i have 4 prongs on the connector coming from the EMC to the relay

2 of them have juice.

i orderred a low pressure switch,it will be here in 2 hours.

and im going to try that retrofit kit and charge it back up.

I assume no check engine light...
Melted stuff is bad. Did you replace the connector at the relay? How did it look? If the terminals in the melted connectors are blackened, then contact will be inhibited.
Use a jumper wire to ground the brown wire from the relay to ground. If compressor engages, ECM is not telling the A/C it can work, or a bad connection between the two.
Ohm out your compressor clutch coil - they sometimes burn open.

Pretty simple circuit - here is the diagram...
