Defective headlight switch?
By the way, can you be more specific about the rear lights? You say the turn signals work. Do you mean both front and rear turn signals, or just front? Also, does the license plate light come on?
Does the dome light come on as it should when you turn the headlight switch all the way to one side? Does the dome light come on when the doors are opened?

If I recall, some headlight switches have the front and rear lights on separate terminals.
The instrument lights are on another terminal all together.
I agree that a bad switch, with a dirty internal contact, could be to blame.
You can disassemble the switch pretty easily, but since they're available from your local parts store for about $12, it may not be worth the effort.
