Can someone tell me if I need to remove the fender when replacing the blower motor on my 71 cutlass S? Or just the fender wheel well? My Mchanic does not want to do the job! I turned wrenches the younger part of my life, for about 10 years, but don't feel like doing it either!

 

U just need 2 remove inner fender not 2 bad of a job!

I would not blame the mechanic if removing the fender was the only way to change the motor - too much liability is at stake for damaged paint or mismatched body panel lines.

Pull that inner fender! The right side is not too hard - about 10 bolts or so, pluss a couple of clips for the A/C hoses. In fact the well does not even have to be pulled out - just loosened all the way so it can get pushed around and pivoted down at the front so the back side is upwards for access. Motor is right behind the wheel afterwards.

I think you can do it yourself easily. In fact, pul lthe wheel and wheelwell completely. Then not only can you replace the motor, but you can remove the whole heater/AC box for cleaning... An oven cleaner bath on the plastic wheelwell will clean it like never before.
Repaint your frame? Rebuild the suspension? All possible while that inner well is gone.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll wait for the winter to set in and get to it. I guess I just needed a little push!

 

You may have to fight rusty bolts if your car has been driven much when the roads are salted. Most fasteners you'll not be able to reach the back side of to soak with penatrating fluid. Good luck and let us know if you run into any questions when your pulling it. John
