It has the horizontal pin connector but the external regulator was not jumped. That's my problem. This is how I got the car. Was it converted before? How else can one be converted.?
That is not the original alternator. Your 1972 came with the one-year-only oddball 10DN alternator that is externally regulated but used a case that looks like this internally regulated unit. Likely someone who wasn't aware of that incorrectly replaced the original with this one. The correct alternator has this style case but the two terminals are parallel (like I I ) and not horizontal (not like _ _ ). You can keep the internal regulator but you need to bypass the external regulator that is on the firewall. This thread talks about the 1972 alternators.
This photo is how the terminals in your original alternator would have been oriented.
It is an internal regulator. It could have been converted to a one wire alternator by changing the original regulator. It would also work like a one wire alternator if just the #2 spade is fed battery voltage. That being it won't charge until the engine speed is increased. Was there a plug in the alternator? If so is there voltage at both plug terminals with the key on? Do you have a charge indicator light or a gauge?

I have a digital multimeter. He had the connector both terminals. That's the part that confuses me. That's an internal alternator and the external reg was not bypassed .
I have the new Exteral Aternator in now. Battery on charger overnight.. I'll check voltage Sunday. I do see now upon further investigation will be getting new battery cables. These are probably the original ones... Then I will be all new. Alt, reg, battery and cables for a good ground. To be continued......Thank you all for the input! Happy Easter, Happy Passover!
