75 Hurst Olds (cutlass) removal of rally gauges
I want to pull the rally gauges out of my 75 H/O dash and I have the 3 screws removed holding that round bezel to the dash but it doesn't seem to want to wiggle or move at all. I don't want to force it or break the bezel. Am I missing one more anchor screw somewhere? The one manual I have says I have to drop the steering column to remove the gauges? Do I have to do that first to remove that rally pack gauge set? I have to get to the gauges as 1. oil pressure and water temp not working. 2. I think a couple of the lights are burned out.
Thanks, The unit was in there pretty tight, so stuck the tip of my phillips screwdriver in the screw hole and was able to worm the thing out (worked around the circle doing the same to all three screw holes and it finally budged and there was enough extra slack in the wiring to pull the unit out, disconnect the wiring harness, I cleaned the contacts on the bulbs and the pins on the connector (both male and female). Got it re-assembled now and going to try the gauges once I can start the car. I think the starter is going or bad ground as it seems to want to turn over then just quits (maybe bad spot on the starter?). I changed out all the bulbs but I think it was maybe more bad contacts on the little sockets. Stuck with incandescent bulbs. Some LED bulbs aren't "dimmable" so just left it.
Well, I was either going to fix the gauges or quit....I finally traced the wires, both of the wires (1 to the water temp sensor and 1 to the oil pressure sending unit) were broken! Viola....found the break, spliced in the wires and the gauges are up and running. Someone a while back posted the diagram for the plug on the back of the gauges and that was a big help. Now, onto the next issue, wiring in the tach - have to find 12v switched on when I start the engine! Anyone know where to tap into a source of 12v??
