69 brake light issue

Hey EVERYONE!!!!!

I have a 1969 Cutlass S Convertible

The issues:

When the car is off or the key is in the ON position the brake lights and signal lights work fine.

When I pull the light switch **** outwards into the ON position to actually turn on the lights the brake lights no longer work and also the signal light will stop flashing. If I push the **** back in turning the lights OFF the signal light will start back working fine and the brake lights too.

When the head light switch is moved into the ON position(**** pulled all the way out) the headlights, license plate light, and all park lights work perfectly. When car is put into reverse the WHITE reverse lights work perfectly too. The bright light switch in the floor board works to when pressed and depressed.

Also to be noted. When I turn the head light switch **** to the RIGHT as in all cars the interior dash lights should become brighter. They do not. They actually become darker. Also if I step on the brakes and move the **** to the right or the left the brake lights begin to go brighter or darker to as if they are the dash lights.

Also noticed when I turn the **** all the way to the left and it clicks the interior lights should come on but none do but the interior lights are working because they come on when the door is open.

I bought a new headlight switch and it’s the same issue so I know the actual headlight switch isn’t the problem. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Is there possibly a bad ground somewhere I’m not seeing??

I'd say a ground issue is likely.
Wish I could help further but from my experience when weird ele trial stuff is going on its almost always a ground.

90% of wiring issues are related to the ground side. Sounds like you're getting cross-over/cross-feed from another circuit. You may even be lacking the correct ground. Headlamp SW Rheostat working what appears to be backwards is perplexing. Easiest thing I can think to offer is trace each wire to/from the Headlamp SW, IGN SW, Brake/Signal w/ a Circuit Test Light. Note the IGN key position each time you test each circuit identifying whether the circuit should be OFF (open circuit) or ON (closed circuit).

If you don't own a circuit test light, buy one w/ the sharpest pointed needle tip you can find. That way you can stab "into" each wire along the path of each wire to determine if the wire should be open (OFF) or closed (ON). Eventually, you'll most likely find one of the wires in one of the circuits is cross-feeding another circuit. There's a possibility you might have an incorrect, faulty, grounded turn signal flasher perhaps. Consider removing the turn signal flasher from the circuit then test the headlamp SW again w/o the turn signal flasher to see if the headlamp SW Rheostat works correctly. That's about all I got from the armchair desktop troubleshooting position. As said, likely going to be a ground fault somewhere.

BTW, you should own an original used OEM 1969 Oldsmobile Chassis Service Manual (CSM) which includes the color wiring diagram and nearly everything you need to assist you w/ your car - it is your BIBLE.

NOTE: There is a 1969 wiring diagram for the L6 & the V8 engine located here. Ensure you're using the correct wiring diagram. Obviously I don't know if you have an L6 or a V8.

1969 Wiring Diagrams

You might consider owning a magnifying glass to read the paperback color wiring diagram in the CSM.
