68 Cutlass Dash Gauge Wiring----Just Need To Vent!

OK, so I go about fixing the dash gauges, lights, etc. on my 68 that have been screwed up since I bought the car (having no gas gauge is really irritating). I repaired and soldered all the circuit board pins, replaced the missing ground cable between the left gauges and the speedo, replaced the phillips screws holding the gauges in with the correct 1/4" hex head screws (how they put the wrong screws in there is beyond me). So all should be good now, right?

Well I plug the connectors back in and nothing works like it should on the left side.....Hmmmm.

So I pull the connector off and wouldn't you know, none of the wires in the connector are in the right spot??? What idiot screws that up? After pulling all the connectors out and rearranging them everything works.

Some people should not work on cars.

I feel better now.

Sounds like you have a car that originally had warning lights and someone converted it to Rally-Pack without knowing what they were doing.

I see you have a Chevelle also. If you weren't the original owner of that car, you should be used to fixing buggered-up wiring by now.

There's a reason reproduction wiring companies exist... Somebody's always got to find a "hot wire" to hook up something. Amazes me more old muscle cars didn't burn than did.

Funny part is that it IS a new harness! The car has idiot lights and as far as I can tell, it always has. I suppose it is possible that the new harness was for a car with Rallye Gauges. It amazes me what I have seen done to some of these cars.

I installed a complete Painless harness in the Chevelle. Wasn't much wire worth saving in that one and I was adding a few new circuits anyway.

I went through the opposite last week when I changed to a Rallye Pac.

There's a lot of good info. Read the whole post. Octania gives the correct wiring order for both the idiot light and Rallye Pac plug. Don't forget to reconnect the green wire to the iginition if you have idiot lights. The rallye pac doesn't use it.

And just a word of advice. The pin connectors release and come out very easy if you insert a very small allen wrench on the gauge side of the connector in the small slot you'll see there

Thanks for the info Mike. I have a pretty good amount of experience working on wiring. This was the first time I've seen all of the wires in the wrong position of a connector. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Well, since there is no green wire in the ignition plug, I assume the PO installed the wrong harness. Everything works now except for the Temp light start check function. I need to run the wire to the ignition switch connector.
