67 tach wiring
67 tach wiring
I recently purchased an engine wiring harness for my 67 442 with ralley pack (M&H brand from Year1). Getting ready to install it I see it doesn't have a wire for the tach hookup. Shouldn't there be a black wire for coil neg side? My original harness was all hacked up for hei change and I replaced it with a non-guage harness just to get running so I don't have anything to compare to. There was even a ballast resistor on the firewall not hooked up so I don't know what all had been done to it by prev owners. The wiring diagram in sm doesn't show guage wiring. If the wire is not included in the harness how does it route thru firewall? My dash harness has a black or dark brown wire on lower left near fuse block that has been cut. Could this be the one I need to hook to? I plan to get a new dash harness too. Thanks for any info!
Pretty sure the tach has a separate harness. My 69 is set up that way, there are also lots of differences between the Rally Pac and non Rally dash and engine harnesses. As far as the negative wire for the coil, its on the distributor, I cant recall what color wire goes on the positive side. That wire will have a different "feel", it is a resistance wire that drops voltage to around 7 volts. Its been years since I messed with a points-style distributor, I change points by putting in a HEI!
There is also a wire that runs from the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid to the positive side of the coil. This wire bypasses the resistance wire during cranking. Hope that helps.

I plan to go back to stock dist possibly converted with Pertronix or something similar. My current engine is 68 G block with Eldebrock intake so the hei clears (barely) but when I put the rebuilt E in with stock intake I will have clearance problem. I know the good points to hei but mine has already failed one time at paint shop...had to go replace module so he could move it.
