67 442 fuel gauge won’t drop

My fuel gauge won’t go down. Unplugged sender and no difference. Even took the gauge out of the dash it stays where it was. If I manually push the needle back to empty and turn the ignition on it does go to how much fuel I have.

bad gauge?

Sounds like it. You should be able to bench test it and make it go from E to F with the appropriate grounding and 12V.

Hook everything back up, disconnect and ground the wire that runs from the gauge to the fuel sending unit with the key on. It should go to E then leave that wire not connected (open) the gauge should read past F
