1972 Cutlass 442 under-hood light connection and function questions
Questions about 1972 under-hood light? After 20 plus years, I have repainted the 442 and am putting it back together. After this long, memories are fading. Right now, I'm trying to hook up the under-hood light. I found a connector down near the steering column and connected the lights connector to it! with the power on, it does not light up whatever angle I hold it. Am I missing the connector? That is the only one like it I see.
Also, what switches the light on when it's attached to the underside of the hood. I thought there might be a mercury switch that is triggered when the hood is opened? I see nothing that would switch it on??

Just a few points. The power wire should only get power when the lights are turned on with the headlight switch. Did you have the lights on when you were testing the light? Did you use a test light to see if the connector is getting power? Also, The mercury switch is in the hood light socket. Finally, the light housing must be grounded to complete the circuit and turn the light on. Did you have the light housing grounded when you were testing it or was it off the car? You can use a test lead clipped to the housing and a good ground to test the light. It is possible for the light sockets to go bad.
