Angry 1970 Cutlass fuel gauge issue

Resurrecting an old thread here. First, installing ttt gauges replacing existing dummy light gauge.
1. Fuel reading worked on the old dummy gauge.
2. Right now the fuel reading is pegged past Full
3. I grounded the fuel wire inside the trunk to the gauge and Fuel reading pegged past empty. This test should tell me the circuit to the gauge is fine - correct?
Couldn't I run a wire from the sending unit connector in the trunk to the gauge and get a reading?

Help.

Yes.

Yes, but you wouldn't solve the problem because you just demonstrated that the wire that now runs from the gauge to the rear of the car is ok because the gauge went to E. So you'd just be replacing one good wire with another one.

Your test demonstrated that the problem is in the REAR of the car. The fact that it pegs past full says open circuit. Could be a bad connection from the sending unit to ground, a broken wire from the connector at the rear of the car to the sending unit, or a bad sending unit.

Thank you Jaunty for your fast response!

I will check the connections in the trunk in the next few days.

I crawled underneath the car and the ground connection looks good. After driving the car for to burn gas (it was initially full) to see if the gauge would move. The gauge moved an 1/8 of a tank but I know it should be at half full or lower with the giant four-barrel I have on the car.

So this seems to state I have sending unit issue - agree? What's frustrating is I removed the old gauge, which was working, and when I install the ttt rally gauge - it doesn't work.

Thanks!

Yes, I agree that things are point to a sending-unit problem.
