1966 Cutlass Vert Radio
Next potential repair/replace may be my current Oldsmobile AM radio which is inoperative. I have looked at a number of sources and find interesting new technology replacement radios from Retro Sound. Has anyone on this forum replaced the radio in their non air 66/67 Cutlass with a Retro Sound Hermosa or Laguna radio. Any experience with install and operation.
Thanks

put a retro sound in my 67 cutlass. if you put in fm stereo you need to change speaker. there's fit fine but getting to old one is tough and the replacement radio is easy to install plus they have instant phone support if needed

Having a 67 convertible I have done this. I replaced the in dash speaker with two 3 1/2 inch speakers, then put two 6x9 speakers in the panel on the back of the back seat. I did use the retro sound radio. It is a fair at best radio. But, the other issue is in a convertible you do not hear it will at speed anyway. Really a waste of time. Looking back I would have put he stock one back in and used a movable small blue tooth speaker and my phone to play what I want. Cheaper and not modifications anywhere on the car.
Just my two cents

Thanks for all of the replies again. I am at the point of deciding between ordering a "Retro Sound" or "Custom Auto Sound" replacement radio for my 66 Cutlass vert. Anyone care to chime in for a choice and why.

I sent my 66 radio to a vendor and had it converted to modern internals and it worked great. They even have them with XM. The problem with the older cars is getting speaker locations that will sound good with the more powerful converted radios. I used a 4x10 speaker in the front OEM location that was a dual cone unit for the stereo sound. With the converted radio it still looks OEM with the luxury of modern technology.

I really can't remember but there are numerous vendors who do these conversions. The radio with look like nothing has been done to it and the ***** and presets still work as OEM. Just Google radio conversions and I think there may be one that advertises in JWO.

I'm an aftermarket stereo kinda guy. I installed them for a living for over 15 years in my youth. The factory dash speaker is a 4X10 and can accommodate a pair of 3 1/2 inch or 4 inch thin mount speakers for stereo output. If you get one of the vintage look units, make sure you get the high power unit. High power doesn't give you more volume, it gives the speakers more power to control distortion, and that is what allows you to turn the volume up louder. Convertibles are notoriously difficult to get good sound quality with the top down. Putting a pair of speakers in the kick panels will provide a lot more sound in the front of the vehicle as well and since they are down lower, they will give you a bit more sound before it is all blown away. You will never get concert quality sound in a convertible, but they can have decent sound with the top down and windows up. Even better with the top up to reduce the outside noise. It is all in how you use it...
