Not sure , but on cars I had back in the sixties, I seem to remember pulling them straight off and replacing them by pushing them in until they clicked and then pressing the rest of the way until the stations changed.

you may want to pick up one of those AM radios off of eBay and dissect it first. i seen them go for $10 before. that way if you done something you should not have you would have done it to a cheep radio.

From what I've seen on some rebuild shots of these radios, you have to take the case apart to access where the push buttons are fixed in place. I haven't done this myself but here are some pics that show the case apart. It looks like the pushbuttons go on an L shaped pushrod. Doesn`t look like there`s much holding them in place.

If you decide to take it apart and refurbish it, start a thread on it and post the pics. I have 3 radios I need to do. 1 is a 1972 AM FM Stereo with rear fader, 1 is a 1970 AM FM Stereo with muliplex unit with rear fader, and 1 is the original AM (front speaker only) that came with car.

Anyway, here`s the pictures.

That's a good point. I would suggest that you don't take your radio apart. Personally, I'd leave to the guys who specialize in doing this kind of restoration. Most of them are really decent and even offer a (gasp) warranty - although limited - on their production.
