youth revisited! my newest find 1978 delta royale

whats up all, i could not pass this one up as i had a 78 four door for my very first car in 1989. i paid $50 for that one with a knocking 350 and another $50 for a cutlass with a strong 350 rocket. man the times my friends and i had in that car! we used to call it the hotel for reasons any 16 year old would know! it was silver with a silver top with a red velour interior. put in the two **** kenwood with the cheapo amp for some tunes. tinted all the windows and even the headlights! actually looked pretty cool. and i always wanted another after beating it down and selling it two years later for $ 200. i saw it about a month later in the ghetto section of my city with the top dyed a dark red and the fake basket wire wheels added.. you guys know the ones im talking about. never seen it again. anyway, i have been looking for a clone of it and the problem with the ones in the right colors has been distance and condition.(i looked online cross country) the interiors are always beat beyond being presentable as they are. so then i figured, since i work for a body shop anyway screw it , find a car that fits the bill body and option wise and to hell with the current color scheme. there are a few companies that still have nos fabric and i can just buy the carpet and dye the int panels red anyway. problem solved and the car will be as new as it will ever be! so a good friend of mine asked me if i knew anyone who likes deltas and it happened to be a 78. his cousin bought it sight unseen thinking he was buying a cutlass and did not want it after he picked it up from the original owner. i think the $800 i paid for her is a score as she runs mint with the 350 and has minimal body rust. it still has the dealer tag on the trunk so im pretty sure its untouched.. i started buying parts already such as all new royale emblems and the optional hubcaps my car originally came with with some classy looking vogue tires for when she gets done up.. i also have a strong 455 that i might just cam and aluminum intake up with some true duals for a little highway star action! anyone have any parts leads please let me know and hope you guys like the story! dave in (rust central) rhode island

Heh, it's a small world...

I had a 78 LeSabre Custom 4Dr as my first ride... Back in 94, paid $800. My buddy had a 79 Delta 4Dr. I always thought his looked cooler, better designed. And I always thought the 2drs had a sportier vibe...

A few years ago, I too scored a 78 Holiday 88 for, you guessed it... $800.

Good Luck man.

thanks guys, im pretty excited about this one as my money to car ratio is way outta wack, so this one moves to the front of the restoration line as it holds the most significance to me. it does seem that $800 is the magic number for these cars as mdudek posted his find for the same price about a month ago. wheelman , your holiday is a beautiful example of the breed for sure. i think the 78s had the best grille and taillamps anyway-were they available with velour interior on the holiday model, as every one i have seen so far had vinyl and cant tell by your pic whether yours has either or. the only thing my car does not have that my first one did is the additional stainless trim on the bottom of the doors. i am going to try to track the pieces down and include them in the finished car. the goal is to hopefully finish it by late summer but i wont rush it along just to get there!

I bought a trunk lock cover on ebay, then a guy from there contacted me and said he had them and other nos trim parts. I paid about 250 for everything and won't complain about that as they are hard to come by all together.. Hey indy pacer do you live in n h? I think we spoke about some nos tail lamp bezels you had on Craigs list about three weeks ago .

Mine is velour. It shows well in the pics, but is still rough around the edges.

I don't have much in the way of parts for that car, but I know I have a few front bumpers, and a dash panel or 2.

A friend had a 78 88 as his first car. It was in beautiful condition. He was sideswiped by a bus while being serviced by his girlfriend. Another friend had an 85. I had an 88 Caprice. That platform served GM very well.

Awesome car. Congrats! Looks like it's in great shape. I've done some freshening up on my 98 Regency, and a little goes a long way. I replaced all the rear filler panels, repainted all filler panels, new side moldings, and a few other goodies.

I'll bet that the paint will buff out nicely. You can also buy aftermarket side moldings to replace whats missing. They should make some of the filler panels for that year Delta 88.

More pictures, please. And Destructor, your last sentence is so true. I'll bet a modern B-body would still sell if they kept making them after 1996. I know there is better technology now, but I think the automakers need to learn to leave well enough alone at times.

Oh boy, the legend himself.

Thanks for posting. Have you actually purchased anything from him and been happy with it? I'm not sure I've ever heard anything positive.

I haven't heard of any other companies that sell the trim parts that I see on his website. I could find cheaper bumpers from different salvage yards just nothing in my area.
